Where should your speakers go?

Enter your room dimensions. SweetSpot calculates speaker positions from the walls, the stereo triangle and where to sit, then lists your room's axial modes so you can see which bass notes will boom or vanish.

Why placement matters more than gear

The same pair of speakers can sound thin, boomy or spectacular depending on where they sit. Walls reflect sound, corners boost bass, and every room has resonant frequencies (room modes) that make some bass notes louder and others vanish. Getting placement right costs nothing and often beats an equipment upgrade. SweetSpot combines three proven methods to give you a starting point.

    1. The stereo triangle

For accurate stereo imaging, the two speakers and your head should form an equilateral triangle – the distance between the speakers equals the distance from each speaker to you. Studio monitors on a desk use a smaller triangle (near-field); some listeners prefer to sit a little further back for a more relaxed sound.

    2. The Cardas golden-ratio method

George Cardas proposed placing each speaker about 0.276 × the room width from the side walls and 0.447 × the room width from the front wall. These distances spread the reflections from nearby walls so they don't reinforce the same frequencies, giving smoother bass and a clearer image in rectangular rooms.

    Side wall = 0.276 × width · Front wall = 0.447 × width · Seat ≈ 38 % of room length

    3. The 38 % rule for the seat

The middle of the room is the worst place to sit: the first length mode cancels there and bass all but disappears. Sitting about 38 % of the room length from the front or back wall avoids the strongest peaks and nulls of the first few modes.

    Understanding room modes

Between two parallel walls, sound reinforces itself at frequencies where the distance equals half a wavelength and its multiples. These axial modes are calculated as f = c × n ÷ (2 × dimension), where c is the speed of sound (343 m/s or 1,130 ft/s). When modes from two dimensions fall close together, they combine into a strong boom – square rooms or rooms whose dimensions are multiples of each other are the worst.

    Frequently asked questions

How far should speakers be from the wall?

As a starting point, about 0.45 × the room width from the front wall and 0.28 × the room width from the side walls – at least 1 – 2 ft for ported speakers.

    What is the stereo triangle?

The two speakers and the listener form an equilateral triangle, with the speakers as far apart as each is from your head.

Where should I sit in my listening room?

Around 38 % of the room length from the front or back wall. Avoid the exact middle and sitting against the back wall.

    What are room modes?

Resonant frequencies between parallel walls that make certain bass notes much louder or quieter depending on where you sit.

How much toe-in should speakers have?

Typically enough that the speaker axes cross just behind the listener's head – about 20 – 30° in an equilateral setup.

    About SweetSpot

SweetSpot is an independent, free placement calculator for stereo speakers and studio monitors. It combines the equilateral-triangle rule, the Cardas golden-ratio method and room-mode analysis. We are not affiliated with any loudspeaker brand.

Every formula on this page runs entirely in your web browser. The numbers you type are never uploaded, stored or shared. Our goal is simple: give you an honest starting point so you can compare product specifications with confidence and avoid paying for capacity you do not need – or buying something too small to do the job.

The methodology combines widely published engineering rules of thumb, manufacturer data sheets and the electrical code practices that installers use every day. We review the assumptions regularly and update the calculator when typical product specifications change.
